Aftercare & healing after the treatment
Good aftercare supports healing and helps to reduce complaints. We explain what patients should pay attention to after the treatment.
Why aftercare is important
The treated area needs time to heal. Clean care reduces the risk of irritation and inflammation. Incorrect pressure from shoes can prolong complaints.
Which aftercare is sensible in an individual case depends on the findings and on the individual course.
Dressing and wound care
- keep the dressing dry and clean, as far as medically advised
- change it according to the instructions of the treating practice
- no independent manipulation of the nail edge
- contact the practice in case of unusual complaints
Shoes and weight-bearing
- comfortable, wide shoes
- avoid pressure on the treated toe
- increase weight-bearing slowly
- discuss physically demanding work individually
Sport and everyday life
Everyday activities are often possible soon — depending on the treatment and on pain perception. Sport, swimming, sauna or heavy strain should only be resumed after medical advice. The exact duration depends on the findings.
Course of healing
Mild pain, a feeling of pressure or wound secretion can occur depending on the treatment. Healing proceeds individually.
In case of increasing redness, marked swelling, fever, heavy discharge of pus or severe pain, the findings should be assessed by a doctor.
How can renewed ingrowth be avoided?
- do not cut the nails too round
- do not cut the nails too short
- wear suitable shoes
- avoid pressure points
- podiatric care for at-risk feet or recurring problems
Take warning signs seriously
When in doubt, it is better to ask once more. A brief consultation with the treating practice can help to classify smaller problems early.
